May 15, 2025

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese is pleased to announce that Dr. Jhonni Carr has been awarded The Arts & Humanities Teaching Award in recognition of her extraordinary dedication to undergraduate student teaching.

Dr. Jhonni Carr holds a PhD in Hispanic Linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles. She teaches in the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of California, Berkeley. Specializing in Spanish Sociolinguistics, she investigates linguistic social justice and the power dynamics of displayed languages in the public space of California, Mexico, and Brazil. She uses interdisciplinary methods to explore these areas’ signage (linguistic landscape) and residents’ attitudes toward the presence and absence of different languages. Dr. Carr has also published work related to the concept of language solidarity and the role of linguistic allies in supporting multilingualism; language attitudes with respect to varying pronunciations of Spanish and English; and the intersection between U.S. Latinx culture and Food Studies. Her research has been supported by the U.S. Department of Education, the American Federation of Teachers, the UC Regents, and the Berkeley Language Center.

Dr. Carr holds a superb record of grants to develop her teaching portfolio and has been praised for how her “language solidarity” approach has helped to foster an inclusive learning environment in the classroom. She has been recognized by how conscientious she is in setting “rigorous pedagogical objectives and [providing] students with the resources they need to fulfill expectations.”

Thank you for all that you have done to support Berkeley students, Dr. Carr!

And congratulations on your award!
