The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is dedicated to promoting bilingual and bicultural literacy in California. Since more than half of the state’s population is projected to soon be of Hispanic origin, we need to prepare students who have a broad knowledge of the Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking world and are able to interact with it as bicultural-educated speakers. Beyond formal coursework, we promote extracurricular activities such as small scholarly conferences. Each year we have visits from writers, filmmakers, and other creative artists from Brazil, Spanish America, Lusophone Africa, and Europe. Contributions to the general fund enrich the experiences of all students and enable graduate student research and preparation for the job market, undergraduate service-learning projects, small purchases of equipment for teaching and research, and support of the departmental library.
