The Department appoints temporary staff during the Summer Session for the teaching of Lower Division language courses. Due to the limited number of posts available, applications are accepted only from students enrolled in Berkeley graduate programs.
I. Applications for teaching courses Spanish 4 or 25.
- Applicants for the teaching of courses 4 or 25 must have had at least one semester of teaching experience of these courses in the regular session.
- If not appointed for the teaching of either course 4 or 25, applicants will be considered for appointment to courses of the general series (Spanish 1-3, 15, and 20), as allowed by the definitions of the “Ranking categories” of that series.
II. Applications for teaching courses Spanish 1-3, 15, 20.
- At least two years of teaching experience in the Department’s regular session Lower Division courses.
- OR, at least one year of teaching experience in the Department’s regular session Lower Division courses in conjunction with at least one year of teaching experience of equivalent Lower Division Spanish language courses at another institution.
Applicants are ranked within each of the priority categories set forth below by the Department’s Committee on Admissions and Graduate Student Instructorships, based on evaluation of 1)the quality of the student’s previous teaching record (as reflected in both student and supervisorial evaluations) and 2) the quality of the student’s academic record and progress to the degree within normative time at Berkeley.
- First time appointments: Highest ranking goes to first time appointments for students within the department. They are ranked within that category by progress toward the degree.
- Second time appointments: Students of the department are ranked by progress toward the degree with special attention given to those students whose first appointment was for less than full time.
- Third time appointments: Students of the department are ranked by progress toward the degree with special attention given to those students whose first and second appointments were less than full time.
- Fourth level ranking goes to graduate students in Hispanic subject-focused programs (in order from the Group in Romance Philology, Comparative Literature, and Latin American Studies). Highest ranking goes to first time appointments.
- Fifth level ranking goes to graduate students in other, non-related fields. Highest ranking goes to first time appointments.
To the extent of departmental need, potential appointees are recommended by the Chair of the Department to the Director of Summer Session, following concurrence by the Dean of the Graduate Division, in light of the four year norm for graduate student teaching. Teaching posts in the Summer Session, however, are neither counted in calculations of the “four year norm” for graduate student teaching nor in those of the general “six year” limitation imposed within the University of California system.
Applications for Summer Teaching Posts:
Applications are available beginning mid November, and closed in early February. Applications delivered following the announced closing date are considered by the Committee late during the spring term under the basic provisions, categories, and ranking guides stated above, for offer, as departmental need allows, on an emergency basis at the opening of the Session and following satisfaction of all approved applications in the normal selection round.
