During the first two weeks of March, the department of Spanish and Portuguese welcomed author Itamar Vieira Jr. as part of its long-standing writer-in-residence programs. Over the past two decades, the department has hosted acclaimed Brazilian writers and artists, among them, Milton Hatoum, Nuno Ramos and Ricardo Aleixo. In 2024, it was the Bahian author Itamar Vieira Jr. who graced our halls.

Widely acknowledged as a major turning point in the history of visual depictions of war, Francisco de Goya's renowned print series The Disasters of War remains a touchstone for serious engagement with the violence of war and the questions raised by its artistic representation.
Emerita Prof. Emilie Bergmann has a new essay published in the book "Maternal Materialities - Objects, Rituals and Material Evidence of Medieval and Early Modern Childbirth", edited by Costanza Gislon Dopfel. This volume explores the material advantages and disadvantages of motherhood, the food and objects present in the birthing room, the evidence and memorialization of death in childbirth, attitudes towards the pregnant body, the material culture of healing and the ritual items used during childbirth.
