Last semester (Fall 2015) the Spanish Department offered for the first time the course Spanish 102C: Volunteering, Global Education and Good Writing, designed to deepen the acquisition of the language and cultures studied in our program. The purpose of this new course is to assist and prepare students for the transition between taking courses and working as professionals. The methodology used to reach these goals was to give students the opportunity to work as volunteers in semi-professional environments--in Oakland International High School and East Bay Sanctuary Covenant--which serve those most in need within the Latino community in Berkeley and Oakland. At the same time students explored the possibility of volunteering in Latin America with NGOs that they selected and investigated. Students exercised critical thinking and good writing by selecting the NGOs that interested them most and reaching out to them for further investigation of the work that those organizations do. Students wrote to their founders and CEOs to set up interviews, interviewed them in class--in Spanish, via Skype--, prepared a web page about their research on the NGO and its programs, wrote blogs about the process of volunteering locally and of searching for opportunities to volunteer in Latin America, and, at the end of the semester wrote a letter presenting themselves to apply for a position with the NGO that interest them the most. All along, through class discussion, biweekly journals, presentations and blogs, students reflected on their experiences in the classroom and in the volunteering sites, integrating in their analysis the themes and perspectives from readings and videos assigned for the course.
At the end of the semester, each students created his/her e-portfolios, a prototype of their own website. In their e-portfolio, students presented through text and images what they learn in this course, and showed how the knowledge and skills they acquired relate to other skills and knowledge they developed in previous academic and working experiences, and how it contributes to shape and support their vocation as future professionals.

El semestre pasado (Otoño 2015) el Departamento de Español ofreció por primera vez el curso “Español 102C: Voluntariado, Educación Global y Buena Escritura”, diseñado para profundizar el conocimiento de la lengua y culturas estudiadas en nuestro currículo. El propósito de este nuevo curso es preparar y asistir a los estudiantes para la transición entre ser estudiantes y trabajar como profesionales. La metodología utilizada para alcanzar estos objetivos es dar a los estudiantes la oportunidad de trabajar como voluntarios en ambientes semi-profesionales--en Oakland International High School y en East Bay Sanctuary Covenant--que sirven a los más necesitados dentro de la comunidad Latina en Berkeley y Oakland. A la misma vez, los estudiantes exploran posibilidades de voluntarear en América Latina con ONGs que ellos escogieron e investigaron. Practican pensamiento crítico y buenaescritura, investigando el trabajo de esas ONGs que ellos seleccionaron; entrevistando en clase--en español, por Skype--a sus directores y representantes; preparando una página web acerca de su investigación sobre cada ONG, y escribiendo cartas presentándose primero a la ONG invitándoles a que participen en nuestros proyectos y, más tarde, postulándose para trabajar con la ONG que mas les interesó.
Todo a lo largo del semestre, los estudiantes refleccionan sobre sus experiencias en el aula y en los sitios de voluntariado, y escriben blogs en los que integran estas experiencias con el análisis de las lecturas y videos discutidos en clase. Al final del semestre los estudiantes crean su e-portfolio, que es algo así como el prototipo de su propio website, en el que presentan a través de texto y de imágenes lo que aprendieron en este curso y cómo se relaciona con habilidades y conocimiento desarrollados en experiencias anteriores de estudio y de trabajo, y con su vocación como futuros profesionales.
