Achy Obejas, Writer-in-Residence for Spring 2017

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese is pleased to welcome distinguished writer, translator and teacher Achy Obejas as our Writer-in-Residence for Spring 2017. She will be teaching a beginning workshop for translators, which will include critical readings, in-class exercises, peer critique and discussion. Language fluency is not necessary. No prior translation experience necessary.

Achy Obejas has received awards and critical recognition for her innovative work as a writer and translator. This includes novels, short stories, poetry, journalism and essays about Cuba and the Cuban-American experience, as well as acclaimed translations of fiction by contemporary Caribbean and Caribbean-American authors such as Junot Díaz and Rita Indiana.Achy was named a United States Artists Fellow in 2014. Her translation of Rita Indiana's novel Papi was listed as one of World Literature's Notable Translations for 2016. She directs the MFA in Translation at Mills College and was a founding faculty of the program in Creative Writing at the University of Chicago.
