Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies

The Department of Spanish & Portuguese is proud to support two major international publishing initiatives, providing our students with opportunities to engage with cutting-edge academic scholarship and digital publishing.

Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies (JSCS)

The Journal of Spanish Cultural Studies is a leading, international peer-reviewed humanities journal that explores cultural expression and social practices linked to the nations of the Spanish state. The journal fosters theoretical and critical work that challenges traditional interpretations of culture, foregrounding Spain’s plurality alongside its geopolitical ties to the Americas, Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Mediterranean.

Institutional Note: While JSCS is produced with our department’s active support, the journal is an independent publication of Taylor & Francis and is edited by a distinguished editorial board of international scholars [full board here].

Beginning Fall 2026, UC Berkeley faculty member Prof. Alex Saum-Pascual serves as the Managing Editor, anchoring this prestigious international publication within our campus community and creating exciting training opportunities for Berkeley students.

paratexts.org

Serving as a digital sister project to the journal, paratexts.org bridges the gap between academic cultural studies and active cultural production. It complements JSCS by expanding on its scholarship through author interviews, multimedia features, and guest posts.

Student Roles

At Berkeley, a dedicated team of graduate and undergraduate students provides support to both JSCS and paratexts.org. Working alongside faculty mentors, our students gain firsthand insight into academic publishing by serving as junior editorial assistants who help manage logistics and copy editing, content creators who craft engaging materials, and community managers who assist with global digital outreach.

If you are a prospective graduate student seeking a program that pairs rigorous academic scholarship with professional editorial training, or an undergraduate student looking for a research or editorial opportunity through our Research Apprenticeship Program (SPRAP), we invite you to connect with us!
