Brazilian Writers-in-Residence

Established in the late 1990s, the Brazilian Writers-in-Residence at the University of California, Berkeley has welcomed many of Brazil's most influential writers and artists for sustained periods of creative work, teaching, and intellectual exchange. While centered on literature and writing, the residency embraces the many ways language and textual practice intersect with other artistic forms, bringing to Berkeley novelists, poets, essayists, translators, and interdisciplinary artists whose work has profoundly shaped contemporary Brazilian cultural life. Over the years, residents have included figures such as Adélia Prado, Adriana Lisboa, Bernardo Carvalho, Milton Hatoum, Nuno Ramos, Luiz Ruffato, Cidinha da Silva, Ricardo Aleixo, Itamar Vieira Jr., Pedro Cesarino, and many others.

During their time at Berkeley, residents pursue new creative projects while participating in the intellectual life of the campus through undergraduate and graduate courses, seminars, workshops, and conversations with students and faculty. Through partnerships with cultural institutions throughout the San Francisco Bay Area—including City Lights Booksellers & Publishers, BAMPFA, and other community venues—the program extends these exchanges beyond the University, fostering lasting connections between Brazil, Berkeley, and the wider public.

2026 Brazilian Writer-in-Residence

Lia, Mira, Maria: Performance/Reading with Marília Garcia

November 5, 2026 from 5-7 pm

Spanish & Portuguese Library (5125 Dwinelle Hall, Level E)

What are the stages of mourning? Which path should one follow: that of memory? That of the archive (papers, traces)? After the loss of her mother, Lia, and of a friend, Maria, the author is eventually led to the monotypes of the Swiss-born artist Mira Schendel, who lived in Brazil. In the 1960s, Mira would sit in her kitchen and “engrave,” in the presence of friends, drawings on the backs of Japanese paper, making lines and writing letters on the reverse side of the paper with a pointed object. Through this and other material and manual processes (handling papers, sorting through photographs, taking up swimming), the book Lia, Mira, Maria seeks to move through the stages of mourning. It includes images from archives, artworks, and family photographs, composing a kind of personal album of mourning. The performance combines the reading of a text with the live projection of images.
The performance will be in English and will be followed by a conversation between Marília Garcia and Nathaniel Wolfson.
