Current Students: please consult the relevant handbooks for detailed information about funding and financial aid
All students who are enrolled in the PhD programs administered by the Department of Spanish and Portuguese - the PhD in Hispanic Languages and Literatures, the PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures - receive fellowships to cover six years of study. These fellowship cover university tuition and fees and provide a yearly income. This applies to international students as well.
Incoming domestic students from outside California are admitted with their Non-Residential Student Tuition (NRST) covered in the first year only, while they establish residency in the state. NRSTs are not covered from year 2 onward. This means these students must obtain reclassification as residents by the end of year 1 in order to avoid paying it out-of-pocket.
Most students will spend some years devoted to full-time classroom study and research and other years that combine research with teaching. Precise information about funding amounts and the distribution of fellowships and teaching is provided to applicants who receive letters of admission. If you are a prospective student and have further questions about funding, please contact spanga@berkeley.edu.
Enrolled students are also eligible to apply for additional grants and fellowships. Examples include:
UC Dissertation Year Fellowship - provides an additional year of dissertation support
Mentored Research Award - provides an opportunity to devote oneself full-time to preparing for doctoral exams and/or conducting pre-dissertation research
Summer Travel Grants - provide students with support to cover the costs of travel to conduct research in other places
Conference Travel Grants - provide students with support to attend research conferences
Doreen B. Townsend Center for the Humanities doctoral fellowship - provides support for students writing the dissertation
Students are encouraged to apply to a host of other intramural and extramural competitive funding opportunities. For more information, please visit the Graduate Division’s Fellowships page here.
