What led you to study abroad? Why did you choose your country/program?
Remaining credits to complete the Spanish Major and the fact that I’ve never been to Europe!
Describe a typical day for you abroad.
Wake up at 9am make breakfast and get ready, head out to class by 10:45 to make it to my 11am Catalan class with Professor Susana Giner. Spent the two hours in class and learned common Catalan language customs! Then head to my second class (which was right next to my Catalan class) Spanish Cinema for two hours where we would commonly watch movies and discuss them. Then head home at 3pm and spend the day doing homework and exploring Barcelona!
What coursework did you take while abroad? How did courses abroad compare with Berkeley classes?
Spanish Cinema and Catalan. The courses were similar to Berkeley but more based on learning the culture while you’re there!
What was the most memorable/meaningful aspect of your time abroad?
Learning about the Catalan culture! I knew nothing about the history of Barcelona and it was interesting to see while I spent time there.
What was the biggest challenge/concern of your study abroad experience? How did you respond?
Getting robbed. Europe is known for heavy petty burglary and I really didn’t see much of this it was more just being aware of your surroundings and you’ll be good!
What would you recommend to students considering studying abroad, especially if they share similar identities and/or are considering your country or program?
Do it! It’s a great experience to have and you definitely don’t know what you’re missing unless you try it out!
