Spanish 24: Freshman Seminar: The Drama of Justice and Mercy in the Time of Cervantes

Tuesday 2-3pm, 102 Barrows | Instructor: Bergmann | CCN: 32926

Units: 1

The abuse of authority is a central theme in the classic theater of seventeenth-century Spain. A peasant uprising in Lope de Vega’s Fuenteovejuna and a prince’s ethical awakening in Calderon’s La vida es sueno (Life is a Dream) are two of the works we’ll study in depth, along with Cervantes’s contrast between Sancho’s merciful wisdom and the gratuitous cruelty of aristocrats in the second part of Don Quixote and Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz’s indictment of the violence of the conquest of Mexico in the introductory loa to El divino Narciso.  Texts may be read in Spanish or English translation; discussion in English.
