Spanish 109: Spanish Drama of the 16th and 17th Centuries

This course will focus on staging and interpretation of central themes of justice, authority, and honor in Spanish comedia. We will read canonical and non-canonical works by Lope de Vega, Calderon, Tirso de Molina, Ruiz de Alarcon, and Ana Caro Mallen; and study the interpretations reflected in refundiciones,translation, rewriting, and spinoffs,  from Calderon’s French contemporary Moliere to the Chicano playwright Octavio Solis.
